Hearing Test (Audiometry)

Hearing tests, or audiometry tests, evaluate your ability to hear. If you have hearing loss, the tests detect the type of hearing loss you have and whether your hearing loss is mild, moderate or severe. Based on test results, your audiologist may recommend treatment like hearing aids or cochlear implants.

What are the different tests and tools used in audiology?

These are different tests and tools used in audiology to evaluate a person’s hearing abilities and detect any issues related to the ears. Here’s a breakdown of each term:

1. Pure Tone Audiometry:

This is a standard hearing test where you listen to sounds (pure tones) at different pitches and volumes through headphones. It helps measure the softest sound you can hear at various frequencies.

2. Speech Audiometry:

This test checks how well you can understand speech. You listen to words or sentences at different volumes, and you’re asked to repeat them. It helps determine how clearly speech is heard, even in noisy environments.

3. Special Tests:

These are additional tests to gather more information about hearing loss or ear function.

      • Tone Decay Test: This measures how quickly you lose the ability to hear a continuous sound. It helps detect issues with the auditory nerve.
      • Short Index Sensitivity Test (SISI): This evaluates your ability to detect small changes in sound intensity. It helps differentiate types of hearing loss.
      • Dynamic Range: The range between the softest sound you can hear and the loudest sound you can tolerate. A narrow dynamic range may indicate hearing issues.
      • LDL (Loudness Discomfort Level) and UCL (Uncomfortable Loudness Level): These tests measure the loudest sounds you can tolerate before they become uncomfortable.

4. Hearing Screening:

A quick test often used in schools, clinics, or workplaces to check if you have normal hearing or if further tests are needed. It’s used to catch potential hearing issues early.

5. Impedance Audiometry (Tympanometry):

This test checks the health of your middle ear (the eardrum and the small bones behind it). It measures how well sound passes through, and it can detect issues like fluid in the ear, ear infections, or eardrum problems.

6. Otoacoustic Emissions (OAE):

This test checks for sound waves produced by the inner ear (cochlea) when it’s stimulated. It helps in determining how well the inner ear is working and is often used for newborn hearing screening.

7. Auditory Evoked Potentials (AEP):

This measures how your brain responds to sounds. Electrodes placed on your head detect electrical activity in the brain in response to sound. It’s used to check the pathways from the ear to the brain and is helpful in diagnosing hearing loss in infants or those who cannot communicate.

Each of these tests helps audiologists determine different aspects of hearing health, providing a complete picture of hearing ability and identifying any potential issues.
